UnitedHealthCare is one of the largest health insurers in the United States. As a subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group, UnitedHealthCare offers a complete selection of UnitedHealth Medicare Plans and health benefit programs for individuals, employers, members of the military, and retirees. The company also provides Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) to Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries.

UnitedHealthCare has enjoyed an “A Excellent” rating from A.M. Best Rating Services for many years and has been listed in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index and Dow Jones North America Index on an annual basis since 1999. Saying that this insurance giant is financially stable is an understatement.

Currently the company boasts having more than 1 million physicians and other health care professionals and about 6,000 hospitals and other medical facilities in its network. These Networks are only for their Medicare Advantage Plans.  There are NO networks for a Medicare Supplement Plan.

Medicare Supplement Plans | Benefits

When shopping around for insurance coverage, you need to consider what each provider is bringing to the table. Summarized here are a number of the reasons you may want to consider getting your Medigap through UnititedHealthCare.

  • Avoid Surprise Expenses. It’s very common for those moving from a private health care plan to Medicare to be surprised by unexpected out-of-pocket expenses. Original Medicare only covers so much, and you will need to pay deductibles, copays, or coinsurance for many services. Extending your insurance with a Medicare supplement plan from UnitedHealthCare covers these gaps in coverage by reducing or eliminating out-of-pocket expenses.
  • Any  Doctor, Anywhere. With a supplemental insurance plan, you are covered throughout the United States. Any doctor who accepts Medicare will also accept your supplemental coverage. And you’ll never need referrals from you primary care physician prior to seeing a specialist. For this reason, many customers prefer Medigap with UnitedHealthCare over a Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C), which often restricts consumers to specific doctors in their network. Medigap even features a plan that allows you to take your medicare plan coverage overseas, a popular option for frequent cruisers and world travelers alike.
  • Upfront Plan Comparison. Unlike a lot of other Medicare providers, UnitedHealth Medicare plans makes it very easy to view and compare all of the different plans they offer straight from their website. Just provide some basic information, such as zip code and date of birth, and you’ll instantly be provided a list of all of the Medicare supplement plans available to you.

Consider Supplemental Medicare Insurance from UnitedHealthcare Medicare Plans

While you may be tempted to risk sticking with Original Medicare alone (Parts A and B) in order to save on monthly premiums, you could end up costing yourself thousands of dollars in the long run. Let’s take a look at some of the gaps in traditional Medicare and what they might cost you if things don’t go as expected.

Part A - Surprise Expenses

Part A Deductible. There is no premium for Medicare Part A, which covers inpatient care (hospitals, nursing facilities, etc.). However, Part A comes with a hefty deductible of $1,316 that resets 60 days after your first inpatient claim in the benefit period. This means that before Medicare will pay a cent for a hospital stay, you first have to cough up those 1,316 dollars. If you require multiple hospital visits, you’ll have to meet this deductible again every time the services are more than two months apart.

Part A Coinsurance. If you need long term care, such as in a skilled nursing facility, you’ll need to pay out-of-pocket for each day after the 60th. Days 61 through 90 cost you $329 each (and it goes up even more after day 90!). This means that ten week stay will run you upwards of $3,000.

Part B - Surprise Expenses

Foreign Travel Emergencies. While your Medicare coverage extends to all 50 states and U.S. territories, once you are in a foreign country, you will be without health insurance. You’ll be required to pay 100% of all medical expenses.

Part B Excess Charges. Even doctors who accept Medicare are permitted to charge up to 15% more than the assigned fee. If your doctor opts to charge extra, Medicare won’t pick up the tab for these Part B excess charges. They’ll have to come out of your own pocket.

Avoid These Costs With a Wisconsin Medicare Supplement Plan from UnitedHealth

The good news is that you can avoid these unexpected out-of-pocket charges with a UnitedHealthCare Medicare supplement.

With the right selection of riders, you can bring your part A deductible to zero, pay nothing extra for skilled nursing facilities or Part B excess charges, and take your health coverage with you around the globe.
